She’s got the moxie. He’s got the sexy.
“Life’s a beach. Then you have sex on it.”
Travel journalist Maddie Saunders has new attitude, and wants two new accessories to go with it. One, turn her triple-X fantasies into reality with Mr. Sex-On-Legs—her friend, Alex Donovan. And two, find her biological father to see if her gene pool has a deep end. She never expected fulfilling both wishes would take her life down a drastically different path.
“Sometimes you’re the windshield, and sometimes you’re the bug.”
Alex, an investigative reporter, grits his teeth when he accepts a joint assignment to Hawaii with Maddie. He’s vowed to never get involved with any woman he can’t walk away from. Maddie falls under the heading of “Look, but don’t touch”. Trouble is, she excels at giving him a hard time—in more ways than one.
He manages to fend off her guerilla seduction tactics until a bone-melting kiss throws his resolve into the ocean. Complicated? Absolutely. Especially when he discovers the real reason they were sent to the island…
Warning Side effects may include but not limited to, spontaneous, uncontrollable laughter, hot flashes and dangerous chocolate cravings. Contents include, one kick-ass heroine and a sex-on-legs hero whose kiss could singe the eyebrows off a mannequin. Can be read in bed with someone special or a BOB (battery operated boyfriend). Please note Batteries not included.

What A Girl Wants is a delightful romp of a book with witty dialogue, a feisty and resilient heroine, and a mouthwateringly hunky hero. There is an exotic setting, and since Maddie, the heroine, is a travel writer, you get an even deeper dive into the exciting locale. With an interesting twist on the “friends to lovers” trope, Selena Robins doesn’t just offer up a light-hearted romantic comedy, although it is definitely that, but the story takes a twist into a bit more serious material. Maddie is a bouncy, sassy sort, but she has heartache in her background that shows us why she has such inner strength and resilience. (She can also eat like an Olympic soccer player, although her tastes lean more to chocolate and ice cream. I want to know her secret!) Alex is just my kind of hero, the steady, serious sort who starts out wanting to maintain their friendship with no risks and ends up admitting his best friend is also the fulfillment of his wildest imaginings. (And he has a lop-sided grin!)
The book is full of great quips and quotes, but here are a few of my favorites:
“The cherry left her fingers and landed on her tongue. “Mmmm.” She stopped moaning. Her glazed eyes widened, and she stared at him with a horrified expression. Gasping, she flung her hands to her neck and wrapped them around her throat. He erupted off his chair. “Maddie?” Hauling her to her feet, he did what any man would have done under the circumstances. He popped her cherry.”
“I have a bucket of water with her name on it. She’d melt in a nanosecond.”
“When I find myself in a funk about this or anything else, I allow myself to wallow for a short time.” She smiled. “My good friends Ben and Jerry and Godiva are extremely supportive during this stage.” (See what I mean about the ice cream and chocolate?)
Did I mention the sex? Well, let’s just say I don’t know how these two managed to ignore the chemistry for so long!
An enjoyable and fun contemporary romance with a twist and a lot of humor and heart!

What a Girl Wants edition by Selena Robins Contemporary Romance eBooks Reviews
This is not your typical romance. It opens with Maddie deciding she’ll be having no-strings-attached sex with her best friend Alex while on a working vacation in Hawaii. All she has to do is talk Alex into it. Her calculating attempt at such manipulation didn’t endear me to Maddie at the start. But soon enough we learn more about both characters and that depth is what made the story work for me.
Alex is my kind of hero honorable, loyal, intelligent, funny and wants desperately to do the right thing, especially where Maddie is concerned which is why he resists her advances for as long as he can. But come on. He’s only human.
The story concentrates a lot on Maddie’s search for her biological father, but the twists added to that plot line are unexpected. Just when you think you know what’s going to happen, turns out you don’t, and I appreciated the non-formulaic approach.
I liked Maddie’s optimism and humor and dare-devilishness which balanced nicely with Alex’s steadier, more logical approach to life. They gave each other what they needed.
I also liked Maddie’s forgiving nature, especially when it came to her not- very-maternal mother.
I was planning for a romantic sub-plot between Maddie’s and Alex’s BFF’s, but that was left with a possible implication but no conclusion. Another plus. Maybe there will be a sequel featuring Reece and Tim?
There is a lot of character growth from beginning to end, mostly for Maddie as we watch her struggle with disappointment and acceptance and separation.
In the end, when Maddie asks Alex if they’re going to make it, you really want the answer to be “Yes!”
Whimsical and endearingly sassy Maddie is out to seduce Alex if it's the last thing she does...and with her notoriously humorous seduction mishaps throughout the story, it may happen! Good thing she has rock-steady Alex in the wings in this friends-to-lovers story with a happy beginning ending.
Her seductive charm isn't exactly what Alex is looking for in his life. He's been quite content being on his own without relationship worries or stresses, though his platonic friendship with Maddie is a constant he relies on more than he realizes. Especially now, as she offers up a juicy chance-of-a-lifetime opportunity to make their friendship one with benefits…and no strings attached. The real question is can HE let go?
This was a wonderful friends-to-lovers story that captured so many facets in one book, I had to read over some scenes twice to keep up. To give you an idea, it started out reading as a chick-lit story – light, occasional humor, a simplistic plot, building up some suspense. Just as I thought I was reading a light beach read, the suspense knocked me for a loop – in a very good way. Not once did this story slow down, as it’s chock full of many bold elements I look for in a great story – romance, suspense, and family relationships. It took me a while to read simply because I had to digest the story toward the end without distractions. I like suspense, usually in smaller doses, so this was a good change for me. If I could classify this book in food terms considering genre, I would say it’s a hearty buffet of edgy chick-lit and romantic suspense with a heavy helping of sarcastic humor. I’m a girl and still have no idea What A Girl Wants but this book gave me a great idea that it may be having my own Alex on an island with another Selena Robins book in my hands during the after-glow.
